Mindful Moments: Managing Excitement & Energy
Lil' Iguana's Tip of the Week
Kids experience big feelings every day, especially excitement! Whether it’s looking forward to a special event, playing with friends, or simply having lots of energy to burn, those big emotions can sometimes feel overwhelming. Helping children learn how to pause, breathe, and reset is an important life skill that supports emotional health and positive behavior.
That’s where mindfulness comes in.
Mindfulness helps children become more aware of their feelings and their bodies. When kids practice slowing down and focusing on the present moment, they learn how to manage excitement, calm their energy, and make thoughtful choices.
Why Mindfulness Matters for Kids
Mindfulness isn’t just about being calm, it’s about helping children understand and manage their emotions. When kids learn simple mindfulness techniques, they can:
Focus better at school and during activities
Calm their bodies when they feel overwhelmed
Recognize and name their emotions
Build stronger emotional awareness
Respond thoughtfully instead of reacting quickly
These skills help children feel more confident and in control of their feelings.
Helping Kids Pause and Reset
Children often move quickly from one activity to the next. Teaching them to pause for a mindful moment can help them reset their energy and refocus.
Here are a few simple mindfulness practices families can try together:
Take a Deep Breath
Encourage kids to take a slow breath in through their nose and breathe out through their mouth. Even just three deep breaths can help calm the body.
Notice the Moment
Ask children to pause and notice what they can see, hear, or feel around them. This helps bring their attention back to the present moment.
Stretch and Move
Sometimes excitement creates extra energy in the body. Gentle stretching or mindful movement can help release that energy in a positive way.
Mindfulness with Lil’ Iguana
At Lil’ Iguana, we believe social and emotional learning is an important part of helping children grow into confident and kind individuals. That’s why we share weekly Mindfulness videos featuring our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) expert.
These short, engaging videos guide kids through simple breathing exercises, calming strategies, and positive ways to manage big feelings. They’re designed to be easy for families, teachers, and caregivers to use anytime children need a mindful reset.
By practicing mindfulness regularly, kids learn that they have the power to slow down, listen to their bodies, and manage their emotions in healthy ways.
The more children practice mindfulness, the easier it becomes to use these tools in everyday situations. Try creating a regular “Mindful Moment” during your day before school, after playtime, or before bedtime.
Even a few minutes can make a big difference in helping kids feel calm, focused, and ready for what comes next.
Lil’ Iguana Tip: Watch a Lil’ Iguana Mindfulness video together and practice the breathing or calming exercise as a family.
