National Child Abuse Prevention Month:
A Mission That Started with Protecting Kids
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, support families, and work together to ensure every child grows up safe, confident, and cared for. It’s also a time that holds special meaning for Lil’ Iguana, because protecting children has been at the heart of our mission since the very beginning.
More than 30 years ago, in 1994, Lil’ Iguana was founded with one important goal: to help children learn how to stay safe while building confidence and strong decision-making skills. What began as a passion to protect children has grown into a movement that has reached millions of kids through music, lessons, books, and interactive programs.
Why Prevention Matters
Child abuse prevention is about more than responding to problems, it’s about giving children the tools they need to recognize unsafe situations, trust their feelings, and know when to ask for help.
When kids learn safety skills early, they gain the confidence to:
Speak up when something doesn’t feel right
Trust their instincts
Ask for help from trusted adults
Set healthy boundaries
These skills empower children and create safer communities for everyone.
Teaching Safety in a Positive Way
At Lil’ Iguana, we believe safety lessons should build confidence, not fear. That’s why our programs use music, stories, role-playing, and engaging activities in a non-threatening approach to help children learn important life skills in a comfortable and memorable way.
Lessons like:
Harm Alarm – trusting your inner voice when something doesn’t feel right
Who’s a Stranger – understanding safe vs. unsafe situations
Run, Run, Run, Yell & Tell – knowing what to do when you need help
These lessons help children practice real-life scenarios so they feel prepared and empowered.
A Safe and Happy Childhood Lasts a Lifetime
Everything we do at Lil’ Iguana is guided by our belief that “A Safe and Happy Childhood Lasts a Lifetime!”® When children grow up feeling safe, valued, and confident, they carry those strengths with them into adulthood.
National Child Abuse Prevention Month reminds us that protecting children is a community effort. Parents, educators, caregivers, and community members all play a role in creating safe environments where kids can grow, learn, and thrive.
Moving the Mission Forward
For more than three decades, Lil’ Iguana has remained committed to helping families and communities teach children the skills they need to stay safe and strong.
Together, we can continue working toward a future where every child has the opportunity to experience a safe, happy childhood.
We hope you will explore Lil’ Iguana’s safety lessons, books, and resources to help teach the life skills that empower children to stay safe, confident, and kind.
