April Fools Prep: Truth vs. Tricks & Trusting Your Instincts
Lil' Iguana's Tip of the Week
April Fools’ Day can be full of laughter, surprises, and playful jokes, but it’s also a great opportunity to talk with kids about the difference between fun tricks and situations that don’t feel safe. Helping children understand when something is harmless and when their instincts are telling them to pause is an important part of building confidence and safety skills.
The Difference Between Fun and Not-So-Fun
Playful jokes should always be kind, safe, and respectful. Kids can learn that if a trick hurts someone’s feelings, causes fear, or makes them uncomfortable, it isn’t really fun. Teaching this distinction helps children develop empathy and good judgment.
Trusting Your Harm Alarm
Your child’s Harm Alarm is their inner voice that lets them know when something doesn’t feel right. Whether it’s a joke that goes too far or a situation that feels confusing, kids should know it’s always okay to pause, step away, and talk to a trusted adult.
Remind children:
If it doesn’t feel safe or kind, you don’t have to go along with it
You can say “No” or walk away
Always share your feelings with a trusted adult
Teaching Kids to Be Kind Jokesters
Encourage children to choose jokes that make everyone laugh, not ones that embarrass, scare, or exclude others. This helps them practice kindness while still enjoying the fun of the day.
Practice Talking About It
Use simple questions to start a conversation:
“How would you know if a joke isn’t funny anymore?”
“What could you do if something feels wrong?”
“Who can you tell if you feel uncomfortable?”
These conversations help kids build awareness and confidence in their instincts.
💡 Tip: Role-play a few scenarios so your child can practice recognizing their Harm Alarm and deciding what to do next.
