Ready, Set, Ride! Spring Safety Tips for Outdoor Adventures

Lil' Iguana's Tip of the Week

Warmer days are right around the corner, and that means kids will soon be heading outside with their bikes, scooters, and roller blades, ready for new adventures. Fresh air and outdoor play are wonderful for building confidence, independence, and strong bodies, but it’s also the perfect time to review a few important safety habits.

Step One: Get Permission Before You Go

Before heading out, remind kids to always get permission. Remember EYEBALLS, ASK, YES! Parents and caregivers should set clear expectations about where children are allowed to go and what time they need to be back. Knowing the plan helps everyone feel confident and safe, while teaching kids responsibility and good decision-making.

Set Clear Rules

Talk together about:

  • Which streets, parks, or areas are okay

  • Who they will be with

  • Check-in times or curfews

When kids understand the boundaries, they can explore with confidence while staying safe.

Bring a Buddy

Adventures are always more fun, and safer, with a friend. Encourage kids to ride or play with a buddy or in a group whenever possible. Being together means they can help each other, look out for one another, and get help quickly if needed.

Gear Up for Safety

Before wheels hit the pavement, make sure kids are wearing the right protective gear:

  • Helmet

  • Elbow pads

  • Knee pads

  • Wrist guards

  • Sunscreen

Wearing safety gear helps prevent injuries and keeps outdoor fun going all season long.

💡 Lil’ Iguana Tip: Create a simple “Ready to Ride” checklist near the door so kids can quickly remember to get permission, take a buddy, and wear the gear before heading out.

Reinforce these habits with Lil’ Iguana’s lessons Getting Permission, Take a Buddy, and Wear the Gear helping kids build independence while making safe, confident choices every time they head out to play.
