New Year, New Goals: Progress Over Perfection

Lil' Iguana's Tip of the Week

A new year often brings big feelings, big ideas, and big expectations. Everywhere we look, we hear about New Year’s resolutions, and how quickly they fade into the background of our busy lives.

At Lil’ Iguana, we like to take a different approach. Instead of focusing on resolutions (which can feel overwhelming or all-or-nothing), we focus on goals, and more importantly, the small, actionable steps that help us move toward them with confidence.

Why Goals (Not Resolutions) Matter

Resolutions tend to be rigid and perfection-focused. If we miss a day or make a mistake, it can feel like we’ve failed. Goals, on the other hand, are flexible, encouraging, and realistic—especially for kids.

Goals teach children that:

  • Growth happens over time

  • Effort matters more than perfection

  • Trying again is part of learning

  • Progress counts—even small progress

Small Steps Make a Big Difference

Big goals can feel scary. That’s why breaking them down into small, doable actions is so powerful.

For example:

  • Instead of “be kinder,” try “say one kind thing each day”

  • Instead of “manage big feelings,” try “take three deep breaths when I feel upset”

  • Instead of “be better at school,” try “ask for help when I need it”

These small steps build confidence and momentum. Each step forward reminds kids (and adults!) that they are capable.

Progress Without Fear or Worry

When we focus on progress instead of perfection, we remove fear from the process. Mistakes become learning moments. Effort becomes something to celebrate. Kids learn that they don’t have to be perfect to be proud—they just have to keep going.

This mindset helps children:

  • Feel safe trying new things

  • Build resilience

  • Develop a healthy relationship with challenges

  • Trust themselves and their abilities

Progress Is Better Than Perfection

One of our favorite reminders comes from Lil’ Iguana’s Positive Affirmation Card Deck:

“Progress is better than perfection.”

Our SEL Specialist shares more about this powerful affirmation in a short, kid-friendly video that helps children understand why trying their best is enough—and why every step forward matters.
