5 Ways to Help Your Child Say “I Love Me”

Lil' Iguana's Tip of the Week

Teaching children to love themselves, respect their own feelings, and value their unique gifts sets the foundation for confidence and strong friendships. Here are 5 practical ways parents can help kids embrace the “I Love Me” mindset.

1. Celebrate What Makes Them Special

Encourage your child to explore their hobbies, talents, or skills. Whether it’s soccer, drawing, building, or helping others, acknowledging and celebrating these strengths shows them they are valued just as they are.

2. Encourage Sharing, Not Changing

Teach your child that they don’t need to change to fit in. True friends and peers will appreciate them for who they are. Role-play scenarios where your child practices saying, “I like who I am,” or “No, thank you,” when pressured.

3. Practice Daily Affirmations

Simple phrases like “I am important,” “I am capable,” or “I love me” reinforce self-worth. Make it a fun habit by saying affirmations together each morning or writing them on a mirror. Use Lil’ Iguana’s Positive Affirmation cards for inspiration or watch our Positive Affirmation videos.

4. Support Independent Choices

Give kids safe opportunities to make decisions, like choosing a hobby, outfit, or activity. Learning to trust their own judgment strengthens confidence and self-respect.

5. Model Respect and Self-Worth

Children learn by watching adults. Show self-respect by setting boundaries, speaking kindly to yourself, and demonstrating confidence. When they see you valuing yourself, they’ll learn to do the same.

Lil’ Iguana Tip: Encourage your child to reflect on what makes them unique each week. It could be a talent, a kind act, or a personal quality. Celebrate it together!

Use Lil’ Iguana’s Respect & Self-Worth lesson resources to reinforce these steps, helping kids confidently say, “I love me!” every day.
