Safety on the Slopes

\"1:12

With winter, comes snow.  The mountains are a great place to have an active and adventurous weekend.  As you teach the little ones how to ski and snowboard, be sure to talk with them about safety before you make a trip to the slopes.  Follow these five safety tips to make sure your child stays safe this winter season.

  1. Wear your helmet!

The average skier can get up to 20-25mph, and there are many obstacles to look out for on a mountain.  Most injuries occur when a skier hits their head on the snow or collides with another person on the mountain.  Helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 60 percent.  When placing the helmet on your head, make sure the straps are not too loose or too tight for the most security.  Wearing a helmet can make you more visible on the mountain.  It is very important to protect your head.

  1. Dress properly!

Dress in Layers! Layers allow you to accommodate for your changing body temperature and make adjustments. Make sure to wear polypropylene underwear (tops and bottoms) – polypropylene feels good next to the skin, dries quickly, absorbs sweat, and keeps you warm.  Look for a water and wind resistant jacket.  Try to find one with wind flaps over the zippers, snug cuffs at the wrists, collars that can be snuggled up to the chin, and deep pockets.

  1. Sunscreen!

Even in the winter, it’s possible to get a severe sunburn, cover any exposed areas of skin for protection.  Most skiers and snowboarders do not use enough sunscreen.  Apply sunscreen evenly to skin that is exposed.  At higher altitudes, there is less protection from earth\’s atmosphere.  Strong winds can also wear away the sunscreen and reduce its effectiveness.  It\’s important to take proper precautions on the slopes even with a forecast and no direct sunlight on the snow.

  1. Updated ID!

Make sure your child has a card with important information on how a person could contact you.  This includes your phone number, the hotel you are staying at, and your child\’s pediatrician\’s phone number.  It may also be a good idea to have a designated meeting point in case you become separated.

  1. Ski lessons!

Children are at the perfect age to learn new and exciting things.  Certain resorts offer discounts to make it more affordable for the whole family.  Instructors have experience in training kids how to ski and can safely show them exactly what to do on the mountain.  Often times it is easier and safer if your child learns from a professional.  Also, when your child is on the slopes at a lesson, you can have some alone time.
